In Tonight’s News…

I’m trying to get back in gear with VV Thunderdome (a weekly drawing activity at work). This week’s topic was “News Dragons”. What does that mean? I have no idea. Even Giggy, who supplied the topic, had no clue. It ended up being pretty fun:

I’ve also being playing around and making brushes out of weird stuff. Here’s some quick playtimes:

Comlock’s Fjernsyn – Animated Short

My Norwegian friend and fellow Brackenwooder Arthur Larsen (Comlock) just release a new short of shorts. The feel reminds me a 2D Robot Chicken. Randomness to the utmost, you must watch!

While you’re at it, check out his site and tell him how wicked cool he is.

Ask the elephant to show you his drawerings…

I don’t often (translate: ever) dedicate my blogs to the work of other artists. Today I’ve seen the error in this habit. I’ve even created a category for this and future posts, so expect more posts in this theme to follow.

Over in the Brackenwood Forums, we were loosely discussing the subject of art and money. More specifically, the troublesome issue of real artists lacking enough mass appeal to make a living or even feel an amount of self worth.

Artists, real and otherwise (myself in the latter category), are fairly fickle and fragile(sweeping generalization). Our egos bruise like a quince and it’s difficult not to feel like shit with so much prominent talent crawling in all corners of the web. Perhaps in a time when we were less connected, we could have felt more confident in being “better than the next guy”, but the WWW piles up stellar examples of such epic size that we can’t help but feel insignificant or “average”.

Such seems the case with Heinrich Sepp, a teenager from Tallinn, Estonia. To me, this kid is a real artist. I don’t know how he does what he does, I’m not even sure he does. To borrow an analogy from MOS DEF, to me his art is a like a warm, gooey oatmeal raisin cookie right out of the oven. This said, it’s not commercial. It’s not Michelangelo. It’s raw, sometimes funny, a little melancholy and bleeds appeal (for me).

So, I thought I’d share one of my favorite artists with the 3 people who read my blog (thanks Mommy, sorry I said the “S” word earlier). Like many young folks, his web presence is currently anchored to Deviant Art and his Sketchbook Thread on Brackenwood.

Here they be, the work of…

Give Me Your Precious Thoughts!

Well, some of you may know, but believe it or not, I’ve been purposefully inactive outside of VV for the past year or so. After getting through school (which was a few years of no sleep, hard times and lots of Redbull) I decided I wanted to “take it easy for a bit”, take a deep breath and be normal for about a year.

The non-stop “too many side projects” left me an insomniac caffeine junkie with related migraines. So, I kicked the Redbull to the curb and spent the last year paying dues at VV and being fairly domestic.

Sure, I tinkered here and there, played around, even wrote a few scripts and lots of premises. It pretty much ended at that level.

Well, over the last few months, I’ve felt ready to actually start producing some more cohesive bodies of work. During the break, lots of ideas have gathered in piles at the corners of my melon. So, a lot of what I have to do involves sorting through the back log and prioritizing.

Near the top of the list (if not first) is a near complete overhaul of my site. The blog has been, for the most part, the only relatively updated part of the site in months. Before I finish the next short and drive more traffic in, I want to rethink my site in a way that makes it least painful to update but still be an enjoyable nook of the web to browse.

I’d love to hear from people who already like my work and see what they enjoy most and what sorts of things would keep them coming back on a regular basis. In the past, I’d get a burst of traffic after releasing a short, followed by a drought of fresh content in which I’d loose all the new comers. This is naturally my fault and I’m trying to learn how to “spread the love”.

So please, if you’re a patron, please take a moment to comment about your likes and dislikes of my site and the content and what you’d like to see added or improved. Be brutal, I don’t mind. I’d love to know what people hate about my site.
