As there’s not much that can be share on the toon front, I thought I’d share a little piece I’ve been fiddling with here and there. It was to be a gift for my wife, but alas it’s been set aside so many times, it’s pathetic. Anywho…As with anything else I rough out a sketch in Photoshop:

Below, I’ve a taken everything down a bit (I usually work dark to light) and scribbled in some rough lighting. I tend to be very loose during this portion of a project. I like to keep myself open to happy accidents and the like, trying different things up until the last minute. There are few things more dull than making every little decision up front and leaving no discovery for the rest of the rendering.

Now I do a Hue/Sat Colorize to get my base color and begin working in her skin tones (yes she will be that greenish color):

Took a quick webcam shot of my hand in the position I wanted and tried to adapt some lady-like fingers to the pose:

At this point I’m trying to figure out the hair but am displeased with it:

I finally get fed up with the cleanliness of Photoshop and take the piece into Painter for some good lovin’. Speaking of trying new stuff, it’s at this point that I get this image of her “making the universe” as she drifts across space. So, I gather some references of nebulas and the like and begin working it into the piece:

Painter makes such delicious brush strokes; It makes me happy in my special place! At this point I’ve worked in most of the nebula:

I’ve been fearing this sea turtle she’s riding the entire time, because I’ve not found any good references for the angle I have it at, but I go ahead and give it a whirl:

As you can see, it’s definitely lacking and needs to be completely revisited, for one, I really can’t stand it’s color and the rendering is worse! This the current state of this piece. I need to get crackin! In the mean time, here are some details shots:

I kept attempting to “finish” her eyes and lips, but kept Ctrl-Zing it. Something eerie that I like about them unrendered, but who knows why.

They’re just Painter’s brush stokes, but they make me happy!
